The Gesellschaft zur Förderung angewandter Informatik e. V. was founded in 1990 and has been based in Berlin-Adlershof since 1991. The society now has about 80 companies and institutions (especially small and medium-sized enterprises) as institutional members and about 90 individual members. The GFaI is, among others, a member of the AiF Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen „Otto von Guericke“ e. V. (German Federation of Industrial Research Associations), the Verband Innovativer Unternehmen e. V. (VIU, Association of Innovative Enterprises), and the Deutsche Industrieforschungsgemeinschaft Konrad Zuse e. V. (German Industrial Research Association Konrad Zuse).
Since 1993, GFaI has been an associated institute of the Berliner Hochschule für Technik (BHT) and the Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft Berlin University of Applied Sciences (HTW). As a member association of the AiF, the GFaI is responsible for the initiation, application, and organization of Industrial Collective Research (program of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action) in the field of applied computer science. Especially individual R&D solutions are a strength of the GFaI. The GFaI has a variety of successful cooperative relationships, renowned partners and clients. The solutions of the GFaI are marketed nationally and internationally.
